2015 Our Two-Week Accommodations in Oaxaca City

Dimitri was back to work during August 2015 to find our accommodations in Oaxaca, after over a year when we did not travel at all. He did an excellent job! Initially, he thought that we should stay at the most famous hotel in Oaxaca--the Hotel Quinta Real Oaxaca (Calle 5 de Mayo 300, Col. Centro, Oaxaca 68000, Mexico). Fortunately, he couldn't book a room there continuously for our two-week stay. (We saw a standard room there and it was expensive and awful--no place to sit and tiny.) Dimitri found a gem for us to stay at instead.

For two weeks we happily stayed at Marialicia Suites Hotel Boutique (Miguel Hidalgo 1504, Centro Historico, Oaxaca de Juarez, Oax., Mexico, +52 951 501 1202, http://www.marialiciasuites.mx/). The small hotel was very new and the design was lovely. The property was surrounded by high walls—about 15 feet--and was nicely landscaped and had water features. The design was simple and elegant. There will be a restaurant in the future. When we stayed there, breakfast (at an extra charge) was brought to our apartment where we could sit and have our breakfast at a breakfast bar inside or a table in our private courtyard outside. Our apartment was a one bedroom and was all on one level. The hotel being new, there were “teething problems" but that was to be expected. Our water would stop running; we had to learn how to use the shower; and the Internet barely functioned at first. Everything got better during our stay; the owners were dedicated to making sure everything worked correctly and was to our liking.

It became a perfect home for us. Outside our living room/kitchen sliding glass door was our private courtyard with a table and umbrella. There was a queen bed in the bedroom, a comfortable chair and good storage so we could completely unpack for our 2-week stay. The bedroom was air conditioned and it maintained the temperature set. There was a TV in the bedroom with cable stations. There was a toilet room that had a large, modern shower (with a gigantic shower head) and a window that opened. A sink was outside the bathroom which had enough storage around it for all of our stuff. There was a real glass (not plastic) on the sink which Audre liked having. Our living room had a sofa, a coffee table, a comfortable chair, a breakfast bar with stools and a mini kitchen that was well-equipped. We asked for a desk for our laptop and a chair, as well as a TV for the living room. The owners brought them to us. We could watch on the TV (without cable stations) the programs/movies we had stored on our computer, while we sat on the sofa. When there were no fireworks exploding it was quiet, even with the construction work nearby. The local church’s bells were muted and the barking dogs were quiet (most of the time).

The owners, Javier and Dulce were extraordinarily attentive, helpful and nice. As an added benefit, Dulce speaks fluent English. That was very helpful. They picked us up at the airport for no extra charge because of our two-week stay. They left a small bottle of Italian Vino Blanco Espumoso. We enjoyed their attention to detail.

The breakfasts have been very good—actually Freddy, the chef and his assistant, Yadely, will make us anything we would want. All of the staff was delightful; particularly José. One day we were brought fresh fruit; another day we were brought flowers in a vase. In evenings that José worked, he made us animals out of towels and put them on our bed, with chocolate. How wonderful!

Noe did everything he could to make us happy too.The cost for our two week stay was Mex$33,371 without breakfast/Mex$35,574 with breakfast. The was a 10% discount using credit card; 15% discount if we had paid in USD cash. We enjoyed our stay and recommend this hotel. By the way, we saw a 2-bedroom unit and it would be very comfortable for a family.
